The objectives of this article are divided into two closely related areas. First, it analyses the public and political presence of the Spanish Army during the first third of the 20th century. Second, it examines sociopolitical opposition to the military establishment as expressed in public opinion, particularly in the Galician press, that emerged against the military establishment, driven by its role in maintaining public order, the obligation of military service, its intervention in political life, and its involvement in episodes such as Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship or General Sanjurjo’s attempted coup. Based on these two aspects, the conclusions argue that the 1936 coup d’état and the Civil War cannot be understood as isolated events or from a “year zero” perspective. On the contrary, earlier tensions and social dynamics decisively shaped the attitudes and behaviours of the population towards these events. The sources used for this study are mainly journalistic in nature.
