“But Grief Isn’t the End of Any Story”

Abstract

Abstract

In this article, I argue that the genre of memoir, and grief memoirs in particular, can be read as an exploratory space through which ecological grief can be acknowledged and engaged with. As I suggest, grief memoirs and their genre affordances for channeling loss—through aspects of commemoration, meaning-making, relationality, community, and more—can be mapped onto ecological grief in meaningful ways. To this end, I bring into conversation recent theoretical considerations from studies on ecological grief and grief memoirs, respectively. With an interest in the thematic, formal, and ethical dimensions of memoirs that document such grief, I examine Liz Jensen’s Your Wild and Precious Life: On Grief, Hope and Rebellion (2024)—a memoir that weaves personal and planetary loss, giving expression to what it means to be grief-stricken, while also highlighting that grief need not mark the “end of any story” but can open pathways toward resilience, hope, and relationality.
