Abstract
Abstract
This article analyzes how international references circulated and were appropriated in the development of Brazilian vocational education between the 1920s and 1960s. It examines how institutional models, concepts, and teaching practices from Europe and the United States reached Brazil and were reinterpreted by state officials, educators, engineers, and industrial leaders. The study is based on bibliographical and documentary research with a historical-analytical approach. It connects vocational education legislation with specialized historiography and draws on Pierre Bourdieu's concept of circulation, Roger Chartier's concept of appropriation, and the notion of cultural mediation. The analysis indicates that Brazilian technical education did not result from the direct reproduction of foreign experiences. Study trips, publications, translations, bilateral agreements, and professional networks enabled Brazilian actors to select and adapt external references to domestic projects of industrialization and labor organization. The article concludes that circulation and appropriation explain this process more precisely than the broad notion of foreign influence.
