Abstract
The article analyzes the relationship between coloniality, political-religious conservatism and the criminalization of abortion in Latin America through the lens of bioethics. It is a study of the Manuela Vs. El Salvador case, judged by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in 2021, about human rights violations by El Salvador, based on the criminalization of abortion in the country. The question is why critical bioethics is not making progress in relation to gender issues in Latin America. The method is empirical, and the approach is qualitative. The results point to the need for progress in critical bioethics to overcome conservative influences and promote gender justice. It was possible to conclude that there is a need to strengthen the commitment to international cooperation, with the Court playing a crucial role in protecting rights and preventing setbacks.
