Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine external and internal factors that lead energy sector firms to file for bankruptcy protection in the United States by analyzing corporate bankruptcy documents. The documents, filed under penalty of perjury, are Chapter 11 declaration narratives in a sample of 48 energy sector firms between 2011 and 2019. The findings show several external factors (regulatory changes, weather events, etc.) and internal factors (poor M&A strategy, executive turnover, etc.) that lead to a filing for bankruptcy protection.
