Abstract

Abstract

This paper studies the seven examples of the previously unknown silver coinage of Antissa on Lesbos which first appeared in auction sales 2019–2024. This coinage dates to the last quarter of the fifth century BC and belongs to a regional phenomenon of mints on both Lesbos and on the mainland opposite adopting the Attic weight standard and Attic denominations when minting fractional silver coinage. The types of these coins suggest both collaboration with the experienced mint of Mytilene in their production and also familiarity with the contemporary coinage of Ainos in the Hebros valley. The silver coinage of Antissa thus sheds light on the regional connections of this little-known city in the late fifth century.
