Abstract
Abstract
The article represents an analysis of the British guarantee to Poland from the point of view of the military strat-egy of Great Britain on the eve of World War II. Documents from the National Archives in London give reason to believe that the guarantee had no real substance and was intended by N. Chamberlain’s government to con-tain Nazi Germany. The public opinion was also taken into account as people had been outraged by Hitler’s action against Czechoslovakia on March 15, 1939. The opposition in Great Britain urged the creation of a large anti-Hitler alliance that involved Great Britain, France, and the USSR, as well as small European countries un-der the threat of Nazi subjugation. However, such an option was not part of the Chamberlain government’s plans. The policy of appeasement was not abandoned; it was merely put on hold until better times. This also explains the British reluctance to cooperate with the USSR on an equal footing, which played a decisive role in the failure of the Anglo-French-Soviet negotiations in the spring and summer of 1939.
