Abstract
Abstract
This article explores the enduring legacies of French colonialism in shaping Vietnam’s cultural modernity through the intertwined domains of education, language, religion, and urban space. It argues that colonialism in Vietnam was not merely a project of political domination but a comprehensive reordering of knowledge, morality, and aesthetics that redefined the very terms of Vietnamese identity. Drawing on postcolonial theory—particularly Homi Bhabha’s concepts of hybridity, mimicry, and the third space—the study interprets colonial encounters as dynamic processes of negotiation rather than unidirectional imposition. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining historical analysis and cultural critique, it examines how Western epistemic frameworks were localized, contested, and ultimately re-signified within Vietnamese social and symbolic systems. The article shows that the French colonial school system, the introduction of the Romanized Quốc ngữ script, the reshaping of spiritual life through religious policies, and the reconfiguration of urban spaces all produced hybrid modernities that continue to influence Vietnam’s postcolonial identity. Ultimately, the study argues that Vietnam’s cultural transformation should be understood not as a rupture from tradition but as an evolving dialogue between inherited and imposed forms, where colonial residues have been reappropriated into creative resources for modern consciousness and multicultural self-definition.
