Abstract

Abstract

Abstract Because bulk superconductors can trap much stronger magnetic flux densities than conventional permanent magnets, superconducting Halbach arrays posses the ability to generate much larger magnetic field gradients than their conventional counterparts. Previous works have highlighted the potential of linear Halbach arrays consisting of three magnetized bulk superconductors, and described the possible demagnetization of the bulk samples during the assembly of the array. In this work, we investigate three configurations of modified superconducting Halbach arrays with the aim of enhancing further the magnetic field gradient while mitigating the partial demagnetization. We consider (i) a linear Halbach array with five magnetized bulk superconductors, (ii) an elevated Halbach array with a vertical offset for the lateral samples, and (iii) a hybrid Halbach array where the central sample is a Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet. Analytical models based on Biot-Savart law are implemented and are found to reproduce all experimental observations. These simple models are then used to predict the optimal configuration among permanent magnets, hybrid, and superconducting arrays for different sample sizes and critical current densities. Superconducting Halbach arrays are found to exhibit better performance for sufficiently large samples (> 30 mm) while hybrid arrays offer a promising alternative for smaller samples.
