Summary The root-lesion nematode, Pratylenchus brachyurus , is a major constraint to soybean production in tropical regions, particularly in Brazil. This study evaluated the host status of different cover crop species and their effects on nematode population dynamics in soybean grown in succession. Four glasshouse experiments were conducted using maize ‘ES-204 Imperador’, pearl millet ‘BRS 1501′, buckwheat ‘IPR-91 Baili’, rattlepods Crotalaria paulina , C. virgulata subsp. grantiana , C. spectabilis and a multispecies mixture. Reproduction factor (RF) varied among species, with maize and C. paulina supporting higher nematode reproduction, while C. spectabilis and C. virgulata subsp. grantiana consistently reduced RF values across experiments. Buckwheat and the multispecies mixture showed intermediate and variable responses. These differences were reflected in the final nematode population in soybean, indicating a direct relationship between host status and nematode population levels in the subsequent soybean crop. Soybean growth variables were recorded but interpreted cautiously due to the limitations imposed by pot size and glasshouse conditions. Overall, the results highlight the importance of selecting appropriate cover crop species for managing P. brachyurus in soybean-based systems. Further studies under field conditions are required to confirm these findings.
