Abstract
Abstract
Abstract This article focuses on the literary genre of the crime novel arguing that while slow memory practices and processes are common to much of literature, the genre is especially suited to post-conflict societies still haunted by crimes from the past that cross the generations with a latent force. We argue that in the crime novel – whether set in Spain, Iceland or Algeria – the burden of the nation’s past crimes is brought into the light of memory through the persistence of trauma and the thematics of investigation that circulate around the crime, and through the narratological devices of analepsis, deferral and plot-constructions that bring temporality and the aftermath to the fore. In doing so, the crime novel offers a form of justice that involves a complex truth brought into narrative, often contrary to official versions.
