Abstract
This paper will investigate how Hollywood cinematography has combined technical skills and visual arts over the course of the studio system and in contemporary digital films. Rather than providing new empirical data, this paper will collect representative achievements in film style historiography, cinematography manuals and studies of digital workflows to explore how image-making practices have evolved and how they continue to influence the visual language of Hollywood films. First of all, the general ideas of the classical Hollywood style are presented, such as continuity editing, pictorial composition and lighting design; then, these ideas have been adapted in the age of extended continuity, digital intermediate and colour grading. Cinematography is both an industrial craft and an art form; therefore, the system of image creation in Hollywood can be regarded as the result of integrating narrative clarity, technological innovation and changes in visual aesthetics. In short, modern Hollywood films still have a classic style but have added new artistic expressions and limitations due to digital technology.
