Abstract
The main aim of this article is to provide an overview of public banking in the Crown of Aragon during the fifteenth century. To do so, the phenomenon is first situated within its international context, by examining other forms of public banking that emerged in the Italian Peninsula during the same period. The article then offers a comprehensive presentation of the municipal Taules de Canvi across the territories of the Aragonese Crown, with particular attention to the process of expansion these institutions underwent over the following centuries. Finally, it compares the three Taules de Canvi founded in the fifteenth century —Barcelona, Valencia, and Perpignan— highlighting the main features of each and analysing the factors that explain their respective success or failure.
