The broad use of the category child labour hinders the development of a precise conceptual language and, consequently, advances in both regulation and the production of situated interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary knowledge on the economic activities performed by persons under the age of 18. The aim of this article is to clarify the scope and limits of the main categories usedto designate these activities, based on an analysis of the international legal instruments that regulate them. The methodological strategy consists of a documentary and interpretive analysis of Conventions No. 138 and No. 182 of the International Labour Organization (ILO), regarded as “strong documents”, in Ferraris’s sense, using Ricoeur’s notion of plot to uncover the narrativesthese instruments construct. The findings show that these conventions organize narratives that distribute agency and responsibility among states, corporations, and families in ensuring the human rights of children and adolescents. These narratives make it possible to identify the normative assumptions underpinning the different categories used to describe economic activities undertaken during childhood, as well as to delimit their analytical scope. The article concludes that this conceptual reconstruction contributes to a more precise use of these categories and provides a solid foundation for strengthening global debates onchildren’s rights, labour regulation, and social justice.
