Abstract
This research examines the relationship between the meaning of a message transmitted to an audience and the qualities of the architectural space in which the communication takes place. It analyzes the relationship between “no-fictional” and “fictional” space, as well as the mutual intrusions that transgress the fragile boundary between the two. It necessarily considers the complex relationships within the narrative, between the main story—the diegesis—and the secondary story—the metadiegesis—,how the message is transmitted to the audience that belongs to the extradiegesis, and what their reactions are. The aim is not to evaluate the veracity of the messages transmitted to the audience, but rather to observe how the quality of the architectural space from which the message is emitted and where it is received can modify the meaning that the audience attributes to these messages, determining their quality and significance, that is, whether they belong to fiction or no-fiction.This involves studying how the nature of the space modifies the character of the message depending on whether it belongs to no-fiction or fiction.As an example, scenes from several films are examined, exploring the dual relationship between fictional space and no-fictional space: between the diegesis, the main narrative world, and the real spectator (extradiegesis), and the relationship between the spectacle that takes place within the diegesis, the metadiegesis, and the spectator belonging to the extradiegesis.
