Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the introduction of the words fachis and faxi (hashi) into the Portuguese language during the sixteenth century. The methodology includes a critical analysis of the literature regarding the etymology of these words, addressing inconsistencies in hypotheses that suggest the Japanese etyma faxi (1586) or hashi (1906) and the Cantonese etymon faichis (1874) are equivalent (Dalgado 1919). The similarities among these etyma are merely coincidental. Additionally, this study proposes a new terminus a quo, faixas de comer, from a Cantonese etymon documented in Michele Ruggieri’s Portuguese-Chinese Dictionary (ca. 1580). By establishing this new terminus a quo for the Portuguese word, this work offers fresh insights into the field of Portuguese etymology and the dynamics of language contact. Furthermore, an analysis of contemporary Portuguese corpora indicates that hashi has been the most frequently used term in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, alongside the native and equally common term pauzinhos.
