Millets, once the mainstay of dryland agriculture in Karnataka, have witnessed a long-term decline in area even as production and productivity have shown signs of recovery in recent years, aided by the renewed policy thrust following the observance of 2023 as the International Year of Millets.Karnataka is the leading producer of finger millet (ragi) in the country, contributing a little over three-fifths of national ragi production, and remains among the top contributors to India's total millet output. Chamarajanagara district, located in the southern maidan tract of Karnataka borderingTamil Nadu and Kerala, is among the state's important ragi-growing districts and forms the special reference area of the present study.Against this backdrop, the present paper, drawn from an ongoing doctoral investigation, examines (i) the trends in area, production and productivity of millets in Karnataka, with special reference to Chamarajanagara district, (ii) the socio-economic conditions of millet-growing farm households in the district, and (iii) the cost of cultivation and returns from millet farming in the study area.
