Abstract

Abstract

Carding affects fiber opening, transfer, and yarn formation, but yarn quality indicators may respond differently when carding settings change together with yarn linear density. This study used long-staple cotton to produce yarns of 17.6–31.5 tex under laboratory spinning conditions. A four-factor, five-level central composite design was used to examine the effects of cylinder–licker-in speed ratio, cylinder speed, doffer delivery speed, and feed lap mass on yarn tensile properties, hairiness, evenness, and imperfections. The results showed that feed lap mass was the main factor affecting breaking work and short hairiness in the original models. However, after adjustment by yarn linear density, the effects on breaking work and short hairiness were no longer significant, showing that these responses were mainly related to yarn structural change. Long hairiness was affected by the interaction between cylinder–licker-in speed ratio and feed lap mass after adjustment. Yarn evenness CV% was not well explained by the model, but the irregularity index showed a significant linear response. Imperfection indicators did not give strong predictive models. The study shows that carding parameters should be evaluated together with yarn linear density when explaining yarn quality responses.
