Abstract
Abstract
Alfons Sutter was perhaps the most notorious German police agent in the Łódź ghetto. A native of Łódź, he and dozens of other Volksdeutsche (ethnic Germans) were hired by the criminal police (Kriminalpolizei, or Kripo) after Nazi Germany conquered and annexed the city. As a Kripo employee from 1940 to 1945, he took part in the arrest and torture of countless Jews. Well over a hundred accounts from the Łódź ghetto have mentioned him by name, and many others that describe the Kripo’s brutality in the Łódź ghetto also suggest his presence. His disappearance after the war remained a mystery to survivors and to international authorities—until now. This article provides the first comprehensive biographical account of Alfons Sutter, with a focus on his wartime activities and how victims remembered his crimes. It is also the first publication to display his photograph and to reveal his fate after the Second World War. The sources for this work include the files of the Kriminalpolizei in the Łódź ghetto and several testimonies, both archival and published. This article will not just uncover the life of a perpetrator who escaped justice; it will also help us understand Jewish accounts of the ghetto as a world where former neighbors became deadly threats.
