Abstract
Abstract
This study examines the multifaceted challenges of nuclear waste management, emphasizing technological advancements, safety measures, and societal considerations in handling and disposing of radioactive materials. A strong focus is placed on incorporating the views of various stakeholders, including electricity providers and the public, to develop sustainable waste management strategies. The study highlights significant technological advances, particularly the use of functionalized MWCNTs for radionuclide separation and verification methods for high-level waste treatment. The key insight of this study is that the nuclear industry has moved from a traditional centralized approach to waste management to an inclusive model that prioritizes public engagement and social accountability. This research draws meaningful parallels between nuclear waste management and cultural heritage protection, emphasizing shared concerns about long-term management and intergenerational accountability. It concludes that effective waste management requires a balanced integration of technological advances, social considerations, and long-term strategic planning. While geological repositories remain the primary disposal method, the findings highlight the potential of emerging technologies and innovative management strategies to reduce radioactive waste volumes and improve storage safety. This study contributes to expanding knowledge on nuclear waste management by providing a comprehensive analysis of current practices, challenges, and future opportunities in this field.
