Abstract
This paper examines how the 2003 docudrama Touching the Void uses first-person testimony and re-enactment to construct documentary authority and emotional intensity. It asks how the film’s formal combination of testimony, performed reconstruction, editing, sound, and visual perspective sustains the viewer’s trust while dramatizing events for which no original footage exists. The paper also considers the evolution of docudrama and the contested boundary between documentary, re-enactment, and fictionalization. It concludes that dramatic techniques can serve nonfiction storytelling when they remain transparent, evidence-based, and accountable to the factual record.
