fu attivato il 3 Gennaio 1983.l'IOE e l'IFS furono costituiti in occasione della nomina a professore ordinario rispettivamente di Nello Carrara (1956) e Giuliano Toraldo di Francia (1963), con sedi inizialmente presso il Centro Microonde del CNR, fondato e diretto dallo stesso Nello Carrara, (ospite a sua volta dell'Istituto di Igiene e Microbiologia dell'Università, in viale Morgagni).Quando il Centro ebbe nuova sede CNR in Via Panciatichi e poi "crebbe di grado" diventando l'IROE (Istituto di Ricerca sul- Institute of Electromagnetic Waves -IOEInitially, the IOE ran the "Electromagnetic Waves" course for the degree in Physics and the "Electronics" course for the Postgraduate "School of Specialization in Physics", both taught by Carrara.Carrara organised several microwave laboratories with funds from the CNR, attracting collaborators and considerable interest by the students.His first graduates were Giuseppe Faini and Riccardo Pesaresi (academic year 1956-57), followed by Anna Consortini (thesis: The Faraday effect in ferrites.Co-supervisor: Toraldo) and Franco Verniani (both in academic year 57-58).Many others followed subsequently .
