Introduction. The training of medical residents through specialty educational programs and continuing education is the best strategy for training specialists in anesthesiology. In Mexico, there is a shortage of human resources in anesthesiology, with a reported 10 anesthesiologists/100,000 inhabitants. A group of medical education experts suggested that by 2030, the ratio of anesthesiologists in the public sector should be 12/100,000 to meet the service needs of the population. Objective: Curricular update of the anesthesiology specialty educational program with academic endorsement by the University Center for Health Sciences (CUCS), University of Guadalajara (UDG), Jalisco, Mexico. Methodology: Five work phases were established for curricular restructuring and curriculum development. 9 full professors with current certification to practice anesthesiology. Results: The region’s social needs and graduate competencies were identified, based on three training axes: medical care, research, and medical education, resulting in 14 integrated professional competencies. Conclusions: A set of minimum competencies necessary for the training of anesthesiology specialists is proposed. Anesthesiology teaching staff must have professional training to implement the program.
