Abstract

Abstract

Reinforcement corrosion is one of the primary deterioration mechanisms affecting concrete bridges, yet its interaction with observable defects such as cracking and moisture remains insufficiently understood within practical inspection frameworks. This study presents a data-driven investigation of corrosion mechanisms in bridges using large-scale visual inspection records collected from an extensive bridge inventory more then 200 concrete bridges in Spain. The database includes repeated inspections over time and provides information on defect typology, standardized severity indices, inspection chronology, construction age, structural elements, and basic geometric characteristics. Damage indicators related to corrosion, cracking, and moisture are aggregated at both element level and bridge level. Severity indices are normalized to enable consistent temporal analysis across bridges with different ages and inspection histories. Correlation analyses reveal a moderate but non-dominant relationship between corrosion and cracking, while moisture exhibits a stronger and more consistent association with corrosion development. Visual inspection evidence supports these findings, showing corrosion in the absence of visible cracking and wide cracks with limited corrosion in dry conditions. Overall, the results question the effectiveness of prescribed crack width limits, indicating that corrosion development is more strongly governed by exposure conditions, age and moisture ingress than by crack width alone.
