Abstract
Abstract
For the FDP, the election campaign began on the day the coalition collapsed. For a few weeks, the media discourse speculated about the planning that may have preceded within internal party circles of the FDP. This paper traces how responsibility became a key concept in this political struggle. It then examines how the FDP constructed an accusation of paternalism against the coalition parties in order to link its demands for deregulation and the reduction of bureaucracy with a critique of the paternalistic state. By invoking its core slogans of freedom and individual responsibility, the distinction between the spheres of the economy and of citizens is systematically blurred.
