Abstract

Abstract

The relationship between painting and cinema has often been explored through their shared concern with representing reality. However, a deeper conceptual link can be found between Impressionism and cinema through their engagement with time, perception, and the paradox of the present moment. Emerging in the late nineteenth century, Impressionism sought to capture fleeting sensations of light, atmosphere, and landscape. These artists attempted to translate their internal perception of the natural world onto the canvas. At the core of this approach lies a paradox of the present moment. On one hand, Impressionist painting demands intense observation, contemplation, and a near-meditative immersion in the landscape. On the other, the painter experiences a sense of urgency: light constantly shifts, shadows move, and each brushstroke must respond quickly before the moment disappears. The present thus becomes both contemplative and anxious.Cinema inherits and transforms this paradox. Film presents itself as a representation of reality, yet this reality is carefully rehearsed, staged, and constructed. Directors anticipate and rehearse moments that will later appear spontaneous on screen. Cinematic present intensifies the Impressionist paradox, as the moment that appears immediate on screen is the result of multiple rehearsals aimed at capturing a future moment of viewing. Thus, cinema transforms Impressionism’s temporal tension into a new form of artistic mediation between observation, anticipation, and representation.
