Abstract

Abstract

To enhance the safety and long-term cooling performance of passive residual heat removal systems (PRHRS) in offshore floating nuclear power plants, an air–water parallel passive residual heat removal system (AWPRHRS) is proposed and experimentally investigated. The system combines an air-cooled heat exchanger (AHX) and a water-cooled heat exchanger (WHX) in parallel, enabling efficient redistribution of thermal loads under varying heat conditions and reducing reliance on stored cooling water. The experimental facility was designed to evaluate key operational characteristics, including pressure response, natural circulation behavior, and thermal–hydraulic performance. Results demonstrate that the AWPRHRS can maintain high heat removal capacity under early-stage high heat load and achieve stable, long-term cooling without excessive water consumption. Under heat loads ranging from 35 to 45 kW, the system reaches a quasi-steady-state pressure of 0.65–0.66 MPa, while the air-cooled subsystem consistently carries approximately 37% of the total flow. The AWPRHRS effectively integrates the advantages of water- and air-cooled subsystems, providing both rapid initial decay heat removal and reliable long-term operation in the freshwater-limited OFNP environments.
