Abstract

Abstract

Christians' identities and spiritualities were greatly influenced by the Mediaeval church's employment of religious artefacts and cultural symbols. This work examines the pivotal role of cultural symbols and religious artefacts within the Mediaeval church and their implications for the contemporary Nigerian church by employing a qualitative approach and content analytic methodology. The main goals are to determine how this synergy not only enhanced worship experiences but also cultivated a sense of community identity in the Mediaeval church and how this can offers valuable insights into how contemporary Nigerian churches can navigate cultural tensions. This study has shown that these objects and symbols were effective means of elucidating difficult theological ideas, building a sense of belonging, and strengthening the bond between worshippers and the almighty in the Mediaeval church. This study concluded that modern Nigerian church can gain a lot by integrating religious objects and cultural symbols into its worship sessions by taking inspiration from this rich past. The church can make worship more inclusive and interesting for its people by embracing and honouring Nigeria's rich cultural heritage. Additionally, by fostering a sense of continuity and rootedness, the usage of religious artefacts and cultural symbols can aid in bridging the gap between traditional and modern forms of worship.
