Abstract
This article examines the relationship between space, gender and respectability in the women of Spain’s 19th-century elites. In contrast to stereotypes of frivolity and passivity attributed to these women, recent research highlights the plurality of femininity models and the active role these women played in 19th-century politics, culture, economy and society. Building on the concepts of "elites" and "respectability", defined at the beginning of the text, the second part will address the reflections from gender history on femininity models and the ideology of separate spheres. From this basis, the article examines spaces of sociability (mixed and segregated, formal and informal) through which aristocratic and bourgeois women actively and irreplaceably participated in the definition of their criteria of distinction, constructing their own subjectivity as members of the elite.
