Abstract
Abstract
This article examines a major controversy that occurred in Manchester during the Crimean War between John Bright (1811–1889), one of the city’s MPs, and his constituent and friend Absalom Watkin (1787–1861). This controversy, which attracted national and international attention, centred on the question of the justice of the war on Britain’s part, and was marked by a flurry of newspaper and periodical articles, letters to editors, pamphlets, rejoinders from supporters and opponents of either side, as well as several public meetings and a carnivalesque display of condemnation and humiliation during which Bright was burned in effigy. Drawing on published primary sources and manuscript material from archives in London and Manchester, the article presents the first full scholarly study of this controversy. Adopting a microhistorical lens and integrating intellectual, cultural, and political history, the article explores the significance of this controversy as a crucial episode in Manchester’s history and in home-front responses to the war. In doing so, the article builds on and extends our understanding of the provincial impact of the war; the fundamental role played by moral, historical, cultural, and other ideas in pro- and anti-war discourse; debates surrounding national identity; and the interactivity between local and national politics.
