Abstract
Educators in the United States search for ways to make meaningful history units for middle and high school students today. Teachers consult educational research for projects to teach history, and national and state standards that provide curricular guidance. This work presents genealogy as a project specifically designed to teach history in a meaningful way while meeting required standards. The article begins by introducing the importance of history education and genealogical research. Second, it provides frameworks and related resources teachers use which increase historical empathy. Third, it provides lessons’ step-by-step instructions. Fourth, it offers an example of one search for Polish ancestry. Fifth, it extends that work by offering additional pedagogical applications to advance all students’ understanding. It ends with a conclusion.
