Abstract
Abstract
The author, Physician-in-Ordinary to Queen Anne, Fellow of the Royal Society, and 'Father of British Conchology', paid a six-month visit to Paris in 1698 and wrote a lively account of just about all aspects of life there. This was published in the same year as A Journey to Paris In the Year 1698. The contents ranged from a description of how the pavements of the city were constructed to anecdotes about Dr Lister's calls on French savants and his visits to the principal private gardens. Snippets from the chapter on food and drink have often been quoted, and whet the appetite for more. So we thought that it would be a good idea to reproduce the whole of the relevant section of the book. If there is any other similar account of Parisian food and drink at the time-and we do not know of one-we doubt whether it could match Lister's in precision of observation and charm of style.
