In this interview, we spoke with Ângela Lamas Rodrigues about the Brum Animal Sanctuary, which was conceived in 2021 after the rescue of two steers, Benjamin and Walter. The steers came to live on Rodrigues' farm in the city of Cambé, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. The sanctuary's name honors the Beagle Brum, the dog who inspired Rodrigues' love for nonhuman animals. In the interview, we discussed Ângela Lamas Rodrigues' activism in southern Brazil, the work involved in the Brum Animal Sanctuary, the importance of volunteers in maintaining the space, and we talk about compassion fatigue, a condition that involves profound suffering in the sympathetic, and therefore emotional, bond of care with nonhuman animals.
