This essay examines the current situation of the Quechua language within the Peruvian educational system from a sociolinguistic perspective, focusing on language shift, Spanishization, and the challenges involved in its revitalization. The study was conducted through a bibliographic review of scientific literature, regulatory documents, and publications issued by national and international organizations concerning linguistic rights, intercultural bilingual education, and policies for the preservation of Indigenous languages. The analysis shows that the historical predominance of Spanish in education and other institutional settings has restricted the social functions of Quechua and weakened its intergenerational transmission. It is concluded that strengthening the language requires sustained public policies, high-quality intercultural education, and initiatives that promote its use in educational, scientific, and institutional contexts as an essential component of Peru’s cultural and linguistic heritage.
