Abstract

V ZÁUJME VEDY A VLASTI / NÁRODA Podoby spolupráce medzi slovenskými a maďarskými historikmi na konci 19. a začiatku 20.storočia 1 ALICA K U R H A J C O V Á KURHAJCOVÁ, Alica. In the interest of Science and the Homeland/ Nation.Forms of Cooperation between Slovak and Hungarian (Magyar) Historians at the End of the 19th and the Beginning of the 20th Centuries.Historický časopis, 2026, 74, 3, pp.471-502, Bratislava. The study builds on the work of Slovak and Hungarian literary historians from the second half of the 20th century who drew attention to isolated cases of Slovak-Hungarian literary and scientific contacts in the 19th century, either through specific examples or by publishing correspondence and sources in the form of an anthology. Its aim is to deepen research into Slovak-Hungarian contacts in the field of historiography. With regard to the differing development of national historiographies, it seeks to clarify the reasons for, and forms of, cooperation between Slovak and Hungarian (meaning ethnic Magyars) historians from the last third of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.Another issue that can be explored by analysing their correspondence and writing activities is the extent of interaction and transfer between these two national historiographies. The study is based on the main thesis that power was unequally distributed (at least in terms of the institutionalization and professionalization of historical science) and that there were different, if not antagonistic, conceptions of state and national history (influenced by official state ideology and the differing views of the representatives of these two nations regarding the development of the state and nation).Similar to Hungarian politics and the symbolic public space (memory politics), the field of historiography also witnessed a clash between two cultures at that time: the dominant Hungarian/Magyar culture and the marginalized Slovak culture. Therefore, we were interested not only in the framework and direction of cooperation between historians, but also in the reasons behind it: was it in the interest of developing science, or was it intended to serve a particular purpose, such as patriotic and national interests?
