Abstract
Abstract
For many years in Mexico, any writer hoping to gain even a modicum of recognition for their work had to move to the country’s capital and do everything in their power to get published by publishers based in Mexico City. To continue publishing with publishers in any of the states was to condemn oneself to marginalization and to go unnoticed by the general reading public. Starting in the second half of the last century, there began to be something akin to a surge of authors based in the northern states of the country, who wrote about that world and its peculiarities—border conflicts, drug-related violence, and the desolation of the desert—while recreating the region’s distinctive dialects. Writers such as Humberto Crosthwaite, Elmer Mendoza, Gerardo Cornejo, and Eduardo Antonio Parra, among others, blazed trails and made it possible for a literature of the northern part of the country to emerge that was recognized by critics and readers alike. It became a publishing phenomenon and, as such, has been largely shaped by the commercial forces that determine the cultural and literary life of the country and the continent.
