Abstract
Abstract
This article takes Ningshan County, Shaanxi Province, as its field site to examine how natural heritage participates in the formation of local identity. Drawing on field observations of crested ibis conservation practices and the specimen museum at Ningshan Secondary School, the article argues that the natural environment does not automatically become heritage, nor does heritage naturally generate local identity. Through practices of conservation, care, and public education, the crested ibis has gradually become a species endowed with local significance. The school specimen museum, meanwhile, transforms the flora and fauna of the Qinling Mountains into students’ lived experiences and collective school memories through specimen preparation, display, and intergenerational transmission. The two cases suggest that the crucial mediation between natural heritage and local identity lies in the concrete practices through which people sustain long-term relationships with nature. Local identity, therefore, does not simply derive from birthplace, but is gradually formed through labor, participation, memory, and emotional investment.
