Abstract
Abstract
This article analyzes the involuntary participation of Portuguese citizens in World War II through the case study of Tomás Vieira (1890–1944), an emigrant from the Algarve deported to the Third Reich's concentration camps. Officially neutral under the Salazar regime, Portugal had hundreds of citizens captured in occupied French territory or detained for political and security reasons, revealing the fissures in official neutrality and the urgency of historical reparation and collective memory reconstruction.
