Abstract
Abstract
The author examines the evolution of biography as a literary genre, focusing on the life of the Polish modernist writer Gabriela Zapolska (1857–1921). Viewed as a scandal-monger and stigmatized for defying social norms, Zapolska was the subject of an early biographical portrait by Aniela Kallas (1931), which depicted her as someone who consciously transgressed moral conventions and violated social taboos. Subsequent biographies and studies (by Józef Bieniasz, Józef Rurawski, and Gabriela Czachowska) attempted to frame the writer’s life within organizing concepts such as "Secession" style, "truth" and the "life and work" paradigm. The author analyzes the postmodern crisis in biography—stemming from the questioning of the category of truth and the decline of grand narratives—before examining a biography published after the postmodern era: Szkło i brylanty. Gabriela Zapolska w swojej epoce [Glass and Diamonds: Gabriela Zapolska in Her Era] (Warsaw, 2016) by Arael Zurli. She argues that this work represents not so much a resolution to the crisis of biography as a consequence of it.
