Abstract

Background: Eating disorders constitute a global health problem, affecting 20% of adolescents and specifically 94% of women. Objetive: To determine the relationship between self-esteem and the risk of eating disorders in science high school students at the “Tecnico Salesiano” School, 2025-2026, Cuenca, Ecuador. Methodology: A quantitative, analitycal, and cross-sectional study was conducted. A sample of 224 students was used, with inclusión criteria being science high school students enrrolled in the 2025-2026 academic year. Two instruments were administered: The Roserberg Self-Esteem Scale and the EAT 26 Questionnaire. Data were analyzed ysing IBM SPSS Statics versión 27. The relationship between self-esteem and eating disorders was analyzed using Pearson´s chi-square test. Results 71,4% of the sample consisted of middle-aged adolescents, with a predonminance of females (61,6%). 96,88% of the students presented low self-esteem, anda 21% were identified as being at risk of developing eating disorders. The chi-square test of eating disorders is due to multiple factors, and self-esteem is just one of them. Conclusion: Low self-esteem does not, on its now, influence the development of eating disorders, but ir does become a general vulnerability factor.
