Abstract
Elena Quiroga developed an innovative conception of female subjectivity in her works. Her novels explore themes such as solitude, lovelessness and death, which in some of them are shaped by a metaphorical framework closely linked to the natural imagery of her childhood in Galicia and, in particular, to the symbolism of birds. Her strongly lyrical and symbolic style departs from the conventions of realism, favouring narrative forms that privilege introspection and the stream of consciousness.
