Abstract

Abstract

Abstract This article presents a case study of a rural Romanian community located in southern Transylvania. By combining diverse sources from the documentary collections of the Orthodox Deanery of Sălişte and the Museum of Local Culture in Sălişte, the study aims to identify patterns of sociability in a region of Transylvania that is particularly distinct. The author examines the role of different places and spaces in Sălişte that facilitated key opportunities for social interaction. Studying the network of societies and unions formed here between 1878 and 1918 offers insight into solidarity, compassion for the elderly and the poor, and a strong spirit of association – reflecting social awareness and a vibrant community life. The article traces developments over fifty years in the Lecture Union House, the Craftsmen’s and Tradesmen’s Union, the Volunteer Firefighters’ Union, the Romanian Vocal Chorus Union, the “Deposit House” Joint Stock Company, the Sălişte Division of Astra, the Beautification Society, the Funeral Help Union, Charity Asylum, the Romanian Orthodox Women’s Society, and the Romanian Orthodox Youth Society. Ultimately, the study explores whether Sălişte can be regarded as a model of associative life in Transylvania.
