This paper analyzes a lynching in São Luís, Maranhão, through the lens of Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (2001, 2003) and related scholars, linking it to racialization processes and the persistence of colonial logics. The analysis takes the statement “A good criminal is a dead criminal” as a naturalized discourse that legitimizes violence by (re)producing disposable subjects. From this perspective, it examines the discourses surrounding a lynching case that occurred in the capital of Maranhão, featured in the documentary A Primeira Pedra, in order to reveal how collective violence is intertwined with historical forms of punishment and the devaluation of Black lives. The findings show that the analysis of the victim’s mother’s testimony highlights the affective and racial dimensions of the tragedy, while the analysis of institutional actors reinforces the interpretation of the episode as an expression of a structural pattern of violence in Brazil, understood in light of necropolitics and critiques of structural racism.
