Abstract
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to trace historical developments in three different countries from1672 onwards, which started processes that eventually merged in the 1680s and resultedin the outbreak of the Nine Years’ War and the Glorious Revolution. William of Orange, the man who carried out the Glorious Revolution in England in 1688–89, came to powerin the United Provinces in 1672 as a result of a revolution that occurred in a state ofnational crisis. The joint Anglo-French attack on the Dutch Republic, together with certaindomestic developments, changed public opinion in England. The growing fear of Frenchstyle Catholic absolutism paved the way for the Glorious Revolution. From 1672 onwards,William of Orange’s objective was to build a great anti-French coalition and reduce thepower of Louis XIV. However, this was impossible without the full support of Leopold I,the Holy Roman Emperor. Until 1688, a significant portion of the Imperial army wasengaged in operations in Hungary due to the anti-Habsburg and pro-Ottoman Kurucmovement that had begun in 1672.
