Abstract

Abstract

Achieving a Net-Zero Built Environment (NZBE) is central to climate action, yet its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in developing contexts such as Nigeria remains underexamined. This review synthesizes over 50 global and regional studies to identify critical gaps, emerging innovations, and policy-practice mismatches in the Global South with special reference to Nigeria’s path to net-zero. Key themes include passive and climate-responsive design, digital technologies, off-grid renewables, low-carbon materials, and inclusive policy frameworks. The study maps these themes to SDG 7 (Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), offering a context-specific roadmap grounded in local realities. The review also proposes a model and a circular roadmap for Nigeria’s NZBE strategy, integrating design standards, financing, capacity-building, and community inclusion. By connecting built environment action to SDG sub-targets, the review offers practical insights for architects, planners, and policymakers seeking to localize net-zero ambitions in Nigeria and other Global South spaces.
