Abstract
Abstract
Criticism on Anne Sexton’s To Bedlam and Part Way Back (1960) has predominantly examined its confessional rhetoric and form, as well as its psychic dislocation and relocation, but has not adequately scrutinized the systematic role of revision in the collection’s therapeutic architecture. This study argues that Sexton orchestrates a rigorous practice of revision to effect psychic reconstruction. Examining unpublished drafts alongside final versions of poems such as “Music Swims Back to Me,” “Said the Poet to the Analyst,” and “Her Kind” from Bedlam, I demonstrate how Sexton’s meticulous reworking of language, persona, and structure transforms raw trauma into disciplined therapeutic agency. Revision for Sexton is a recursive method that distances her speakers from institutional psychiatric authority and replaces it with self-directed linguistic and moral responsibility. By tracing her revisions from chaos to craft, this study repositions her as a pioneering figure in the lineage of post-WWII therapeutic poetry, where the act of rewriting is itself an effective method of personal and collective reparation.
