Abstract

Abstract

This paper explores how John Millington Synge’s The Aran Islands (1907) constructs a spatial imaginary grounded in insular and mythic geographies, situating the text within broader modernist preoccupations with space rather than historical progress. Drawing on Rebecca Walsh’s The Geopoetics of Modernism (2015) as a theoretical framework, the analysis argues that Synge does not merely document the Aran Islands, but reimagines them as symbolic landscapes – sites where Ireland’s cultural roots, creative energy, and national identity converge. His ethnographic prose transforms physical geography into imaginative terrain, shaped by the islanders’ relationship with nature, ritual, and language. The paper also considers Seamus Heaney’s poem “Synge on Aran” (1966) as a poetic response that extends and affirms Synge’s spatial vision. Heaney reflects on Synge’s lived experience as an encounter with creative dislocation, suggesting that the islands became a crucible for artistic transformation. By reading these two texts together, the study argues that the west of Ireland emerges as a key site of modernist spatial experimentation, where geography is inseparable from literary form and cultural identity.
