Abstract

Abstract

As power systems increasingly rely on flexibility resources, nuclear power will inevitably participate in grid load-following services. To improve the dynamic response performance of nuclear power plants during load-following operation, this paper proposes a reactor turbine coordinated control strategy based on thermal-mismatch analysis. The energy transfer characteristics between the primary and secondary loops of a pressurized water reactor (PWR) nuclear power plant operating in the “one reactor-two turbines” mode are analyzed. An energy-demand signal for the secondary loop and an energy-supply signal for the primary loop are constructed, and their difference is defined as the thermal-mismatch signal. By incorporating the pressure-power fitting coefficient and a control rod sensitivity coefficient, the thermal-mismatch signal is introduced into the reactor power control system as a feedforward signal. Furthermore, the heat-storage calculation methods of different regions in the once-through steam generator are analyzed. The boundary lengths are determined based on mass conservation on the secondary side, and the solution approach for the thermal storage coefficient is ultimately established. Finally, simulation results under operating conditions demonstrate that the strategy significantly improves the dynamic response of the primary-loop temperature during load variations. This paper provides an effective coordinated control scheme for enhancing the flexibility of PWR nuclear power plants in load-following operation.
