Abstract

Abstract

This study critically examines the construction and transformation of masculine identity embodied by the protagonist in Disney Pixar’s Elio (2025). Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the analysis draws upon R. W. Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity and Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity to investigate Elio’s transition from vulnerability and fear toward confidence and emotional agency. Initially, Elio is portrayed as a fearful and emotionally vulnerable boy whose sense of self is shaped by dominant social expectations surrounding masculinity. However, his experiences within the Communiverse gradually enable him to renegotiate these expectations and construct an alternative masculine identity grounded not in dominance or physical power, but in empathy, honesty, emotional openness, and self-awareness. His courage is articulated through communicative and relational practices, particularly dialogue, emotional expression, and reconciliation. From Butler’s perspective, these expressions can be interpreted as performative acts that disrupt conventional gender norms and demonstrate the fluid and socially constructed character of masculine identity. The study therefore argues that Elio offers a reconstruction of masculinity by reframing emotional openness, vulnerability, and empathy as sources of strength rather than weakness, thereby challenging hegemonic ideals of masculinity and presenting a more inclusive and humane representation of male identity.
