This essay examines the “fragmented memory” of Mexican women who were married to Japanese men during the Pacific War and how they faced their husbands’ Internment. While most papers focus on the role of male Japanese migrants or the so-called “mail brides”, this article foregrounds the human trauma, uncertainties, and reactions of Mexican wives, which have often been repressed or concealed from history. This, I argue, is an attempt to challenge the dominant narrative to recover their experiences from that period, including their actions to advocate for their husbands’ freedom, run businesses, take care of their families, and have a public role in a society full of violence and persistent harassment.
